Week 2 Marathon Training

Wow week 2 is over! This week my pace band arrived!

I'll be totally honest, when I saw the band the reality finally set in. CRAP I HAVE TO RUN 26.2 MILES. I know what I signed up for, but for some reason looking at this made it real!

This week I was scheduled to run 30 mins on Tuesday and Thursday and 4 miles on Sunday.

Tuesday!
Tuesdays run was very good! I stayed ahead of my pace!!

Thursday
Thursday
Thursday wasn't very good. I wrote a post about it. I won't recap it again in full details, if you want you can read about! Short story, it was a bad run that turned out good in the end. It was more of a mental day than physical. I've decided that when I have days like these I'm adding a mile to my day. That way when it comes to race day I'll be ready!

Sunday
Sundays long run was suppose to be 4 miles. I felt so good that I went 5 miles! I'm starting to take 30 RECOVERYbits and 30 ENERGYbits before I run. My knee still feels great, but now that I'm adding mileage I want to make sure it stays that way.

This week I wore my race day shirt and a different Sparkle Athletic skirt. I'm really liking the turquoise skirt with the shirt! Also really like the shoes with the outfit.

So far training is going great! With the Jeff Galloway program I'm only running three days a week. I'm not getting burned out from running which is great!

Bad run turns good

We've all had "those" run days. When everything is against you and it just sucks. Well today was sorta that day.

I woke up at 4:00am to drive my husband to the airport. Unfortunately this has become a common thing. He needs to be in Chicago before noon which means early wake up calls for us. Usually when he has these early flights I don't do much the rest of the day cause I feel like a zombie. Yesterday I decided that I WILL get my run done on Thursday and that was that. I had my normal two cups of coffee, but this time I added 30 ENERGYbits. Felt good when I got home, but didn't do much. I finally decided at 8:30 I MUST run. Took 30 more ENERGYbits and 30 RECOVERYbits (trying to add RECOVERYbits before my runs now in addition to at night.)

Did my normal 1 mile warm up walk and then it was time to run 3 miles. I have been eliminating my walk breaks the last couple of short runs, but I knew today I needed my walk breaks. I wore two pace bands. The 2:12:30 and the 2:15 half marathon. I really wanted to keep the 2:12:30 pace, but knew it was a long shot.

Mile one 10:16 pace
Mile two 10:10 pace
Mile three 10:12 pace
Mile  four  9:52 at 1.0 incline

The plan was for 3 miles. At 2.5 miles I was tired and wanted to stop. I was so close to three miles, but still wanted to stop. That's when I decided that I was pushing forward and wasn't going to stop. I needed to prove that I CAN DO IT! I'm very proud of myself that I finished my run and added an extra mile!

I have this quote hanging on the wall in front of the treadmill. I repeat it in my head and motivate myself not to stop. Today was both mental and physical day. I know if I can power through these bad days I'll be ready for that 26.2 miles. I'm really thinking on bad run days I'm going to force myself to go that extra mile, literally!

When I was all done with the 4 miles I decided to take Mousse for a run. He's on new meds and is feeling so much better. In the last week he's been demanding that I take him for a walk. Today was the 2nd day we ran. Years ago he could about 1 mile with me. He's a little slow, but he'll get there! Also he'll be 10 on Wednesday!!!

When you have a bad run day, what do you do?

Eggplant "Pizza"

I really don't know what to call these, so I'm sticking with Eggplant "Pizza." Of course it's all grain free.

Start with a peeled eggplant and slice it.

Then I diced tomatoes and red onions, added salt and Italian seasoning.

Took the tomato and onions and topped the eggplant slices.

My slices are on the right and hubby's is on the left.
I added the photo of both my slices and my husbands cause he thinks his looks better :)

I topped them with parmesan cheese.

Baked in a 350 degree oven for 20 mins.

Hubby's

Mine
Next time I may add garlic.

Week 1 Marathon Training

I can't believe week one of training is done. Before I know it, it's gonna be race day. I stuck to my plan this week, I did flip a run day with a walk day.

I copied the training plan from Jeff Galloway's website to an Excel spreadsheet. I love that Day 1 was a rest day! Day 2 I tried using the Jeff Galloway app on my phone. I won't be using it anymore. It drained my battery and my phone got so hot it was burning my arm. Plus I like to walk 1 mile for a warm up and he just has you warm up for 3 mins. It was a great motivator, but in 36 mins my battery went from 74% to 30%.

I switched Thursday and Friday this week. I was planning on running for 3 miles which at my half marathon pace would have had me run for 30:54. I was feeling so good during my run that I never took a walk break. I just kept running at 6.3 until 3 miles then I kept hitting the speed up button until 30:54.

During the week I'll be training for a half marathon and Sundays the marathon. I'm really trying to PR during the Space Coast Half Marathon. Expect to see lots of photos of my Pace Bands:)

My "long run" this week was 3 miles. I know that doesn't seem like a long run, but hey that's what the chart told me to do. My plan was to run 3 mins and 52 seconds at 6.0 then walk 1 min at 4.0. That would put me ahead of my marathon pace, but I figure once I get up to higher mileage if I need to walk more it should all even out in the end. After the first mile I felt sluggish and tired. I felt I was running too slow, but I kept up my slow pace. After 2.5 miles I ended up running at 6.2 and still walking at 4.0. I guess running too slow wears me out. Next week I'll start out at 6.2 and 4.0 and see if how I feel after a couple of miles then maybe slow down if needed.

The 5:00 marathon pace band hasn't arrived yet, so I'm using a half marathon one for now.
This weeks goal was to try new flavors of coconut water. I really like the pineapple flavored one, but I just tried orange and peach & mango. I really liked both! Yeah variety! I did try the tropical fruit and I don't like it.
Yummy!
Not so yummy.
Since this is week one I decided I needed to wear the shirt I plan on wearing during the marathon. Still not sure which Sparkle Athletic skirt I'll wear with it, so over the next several weeks I'll keep changing the skirt and see which I like best.

I'm training for a MARATHON!

Today kicks off my official start day of training for The Walt Disney Marathon!!!

I'm just a little excited about this! I always said "I'd never do a marathon" but here we are!

I chose to use the Jeff Galloway training plan. For my birthday I received his marathon book. After reading it, I decided to do the 32 week training plan from his website. The book has a 29 week program, but since I have the time I'm doing the longer one. I used his training program for the Space Coast Half Marathon in 2012, and I finished faster than had planned, so why change a program that worked before.

This was in June 2013 when he was at my local running store.
I'm sure in the next 32 weeks there will be ups and downs, good run days and pure mental running days, but I'm sticking to my plan. I'm still trying to figure out my fueling plan, since grains are no longer in my diet. I think I'm going to stick to dried fruit instead of Clif chews or Jelly Belly Sport Beans. Of course I'll be taking ENERGYbits, but I'll need something else to go along with them. Guess I better start liking the taste of coconut water again. All of the sports drinks that I've looked at all have grains or corn. Oh the joys of living with food intolerances.

I'm thinking that every Monday I'll post an update just on how the training is going!

What are you training for?

Workout Recap 6/8/14

Sunday 6/8/14 - I ran! I'm just over one week before I officially start my marathon training, so I used the Jeff Galloway run/walk/run method today. I ran for 3:52 minutes and walked for 1 minute. The reason my run time is odd is because I stare at the time too much on the treadmill. If it's an odd time I can't count down as easily. I know I'm strange :)

Monday 6/9/14 - No workout we did yard work, house work and swam! I did plant a zucchini!

Tuesday 6/10/14 -  I walked 1/2 mile to warm up and ran for 1.5 miles. My allergies were bugging me plus Safelite was replacing my windshield and I was a nervous wreak. I don't like when my car gets worked on.

Wednesday 6/11/14 - Walked for 30 mins and did 15 mins of yoga!

I get help with yoga!
Thursday 6/12/14 -  I just walked a mile.

Friday 6/13/14 - I walked one mile, ran two miles, followed by one mile walk! Also upper body workout and yoga.

Saturday 6/14/14 - I walked one mile then ran 4 miles! Wanted to go 3 miles, but settled for 4! It was a pure mental run day!
